A handful of records fell in a very big way at the track

The kids are fast.

On a day that was far from conducive to record breaking performances, no less than nine new standards were set, including four by the novice class alone.

And it wasn't just that the records were being beaten. There were records that were smashed to smithereens.

Annabelle Richardson (NG - Lo-Ellen) blazed through her 200m heat in a time of 25.72, then lowered that mark to 25.61 in the final. Not only was the clocking almost a second and a half ahead of the second place finisher, it topped a record of 26.25 that had stood since 2004 when Olympian Rebecca Johnston entered high-school.

In the longer distances, Julian Luoma (NB - Lo-Ellen) shaved an astounding 19 seconds off the 3000m record time of 9:50.79 (Augustin Marks de Chabris - 2016), crossing the line in 9:31.20, some seven seconds faster than the current NOSSA record.

Still with an impressive high-school freshman class, multi-sport talent Levi Blouin (Lo-Ellen) blitzed through the 100m hurdles course in 14.61 seconds, well ahead of the previous novice boys best time of 15.30 (Bryce Desabrais - 2018).

Rounding out the novice record setting quartet was Blair Rickard of Lasalle, sailing the discus 27.83 metres (vs 26.61m - Lauren Fearn - 2018).

Junior aged record setters included Janssen Fransen (200m dash - 23.05 seconds) and Nadia MacDonald (long jump - 5.14 metres), both from Lo-Ellen Park as the Knights bolted their way to a sizeable day one lead in the aggregate standings.

Both 4 X 400m relay times came a tumbling down as the Lo-Ellen foursomes of Milena Kulik, Nadia MacDonald, Barbara Ceccon and Amanda Syncox (Open Girls - 4:09.48) and Ty Dubreuil, Shiloh Sauve, Jacob Paille and Corey Lacroix (Open Boys - 3:30.36) all entered the record books.

Finally, Sophia Carlson of Marymount would also enter the record books, registering a time of 3:02.87 in the girls 800m ambulatory dash.

Although it wasn't a new SDSSAA standard, Lasalle senior hurdler Logan Mannella clocked in at 15.48 seconds in the final (record is owned by Elijah Allen - 15.30 seconds - 2006), just ahead of Marcus Laframboise (Lockerby - 15.59) and Corey Lacroix (Lo-Ellen - 15.66).

"I would say that's my favourite event," said Mannella, an 18 year old grade 12 student who has both the 100m dash and 4 X 100m relay on the schedule for Thursday. "I decided to try it in grade nine and stuck with it ever since then."

Now has anyone who has ever attempted the hurdles well knows, technique is critical to success.

"My trail leg, the second leg over the hurdle, has really improved," said Mannella. "That one has taken a long time to get really good. The challenge was the positioning. I always had my knee lower down so that would hit the hurdle and lose me time - but it's really come along."

Looking to break the 15.25 second benchmark, Mannella is hopeful of making another trek to OFSSA this spring, an event at which he has garnered a level of comfort in a very uncomfortable setting.

"It still fazes me a bit - but I found it helped me just to talk to the people around you," he suggested. "They're feeling the same way you are. I found that helped me with the nerves a lot."
