As a first round OHL pick (11th overall), Brayden Bennett could attend the Sudbury Wolves Orientation Camp this past weekend knowing that there is close to a 100% chance that he will be in the team's starting lineup come their 2025-2026 season opener in September.
As a first round pick who saw his draft year ended mid-January due to a broken collarbone, the talented Toronto Titans forward entered camp feeling he had something to prove.
"This is really my first fast-paced game since January, obviously, with my injury," said Bennett following a 6-5 win for Team Blue (his crew) in which he found the back of the net for the first of two times on the weekend.
"Just getting back out there, re-training your brain to get the little things right, knowing the rest will come."
"It was good to get some skates in," Bennett added. "Most people are a bit nervous coming in but once you get that first skate in, the jitters go away. It's good to practice, meet some new people and have some fun."
With a handful of 2024 picks in attendance, including some who saw OHL action last winter, there were some very recognizable names on the scoresheet as Luca Blonda opened the scoring 45 seconds in and Henry Doucet scored twice for Team Blue.
A free agent invite from Ronkomkoma (New York) who lit it up with the Long Island 16U AAA Gulls last year (54GP - 28G - 33A), Kevin Lysohir recorded a goal and two assists in a losing cause.
On Sunday, the tables were turned as Team White edged Team Blue 6-5, powered in large part by a four goal effort from Kingston Harris (6th round - 2025), with all four goals coming in the middle stanza.
Bennett and Greg Najda amassed three points each (G + 2A) for Team Blue, with the former summarizing quite nicely the mindset he hopes to carry into his rookie year in the OHL.
"The injury sucked and it was a rough time for me, but I think I deserved to be drafted where I was drafted," he said. "But I would love to prove myself even more. I have the kind of mindset that you should never get ahead of yourself."
"I'm happy just to get here and show what I can do."
