Sudbury needs one more win to be safe
2025-05-13

Before leaving for Calgary, site of the 2025 Centennial Cup, Greater Sudbury Cubs head coach Darryl Moxam suggested that the experience of a winner take all game seven affair versus the Hearst Lumberjacks could really help his team - should the situation be revisited again.

Ideally, we're quite sure that Moxam would have preferred not to have his team possibly playing a "must win" game to close out round robin play Wednesday in Alberta.

But unfortunately, back to back losses, the second coming at the hands of the Trenton Golden Hawks in the battle of Ontario means that the Cubs could well require a regulation time win over the Kam River Fighting Walleye in order to advance to a quarter-final contest.

Once again, Sudbury was very much in the game, trailing 2-1 after twenty minutes of play as David Fournier (Golden Hawks) and Alexandre Valade traded goals 31 seconds apart, with Fournier giving Trenton the lead with just six ticks showing on the clock.

Lincoln Moore netted the only goal of period two to deadlock the matchup at deuces heading to the third. In the end, it was the tendency of the NOJHL champions to allow quick strike tallies that doomed the northern Ontario crew.

Aaron Brown restored the Trenton advantage at the 2:19 mark and just 11 seconds later, Jonathan Pylypuik doubled that lead, with Thomas Kuipers adding a little icing to the cake to close things out.

Karsen Chartier was tagged with the loss in net for Sudbury, chased after the fourth Golden Hawks goal as Noah Beaulne saw his first action of the tournament.

With nine points and four games in the books, Trenton has secured a playoff berth but could surrender first place to the Northern Manitoba Blizzard. The MJHL representatives have seven points and will play the Grande Prairie Storm in the round robin finale Wednesday evening.

The Cubs, meanwhile, will open the three game set tomorrow facing Kam River, with Sudbury and Grande Prairie tied at three points each and Kam River right on their heels with two points.
