The diversity of the Sudbury sporting spectrum is clear to see again this year as the Greater Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee announces the five individuals and third-ever Norm Mayer Dynasty recipient who will be feted as the Class of 2025 inductees on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at the Caruso Club.
The incoming group features:
Meagan Duhamel: Athlete – Figure SkatingA three-time Olympic medal winner and two-time world champion, Lively native Meagan Duhamel enjoyed her greatest success as a pairs skater alongside partner Eric Radford. They were also seven-time Canadian pairs champions. Duhamel won the sixth and final season of CBC’s Battle of the Blades. She first laced up as a singles skater at the Walden Skating Club before the eventual move to pairs.
Bob Parker: Builder – Hockey
Born in Nova Scotia, Bob Parker moved to Levack in his late teens. He has spent his entire adult life immersed in sport in Onaping Falls. A mid-range athlete in hockey and fastball, Parker enjoyed decades of valuable contributions as a coach and on the management side of sports.
That passion was also on full display when Parker served as the mayor of Onaping Falls in the 1980s and ‘90s. With contacts right across Canada, Bob Parker continues the ensure that the lore of the Onaping Falls Huskies and other sports in the small mining town are passed along, from one generation to the next.
Alex and Florence Hurd: Athlete – Speed SkatingBorn in the Maritimes, siblings Alex and Florence Hurd moved to Northern Ontario in the 1930s where they rose to prominence, at the national and international levels in the sport of speed skating – ultimately competing at the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.
Women’s speed skating was still a demonstration sport (it became an official Olympic sport in 1960). Alex would capture both silver and bronze in the upstate New York mountain town. The siblings were both named to the 1936 Olympic team which was unable to secure the funding needed to travel to the Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
Dave Makela: Administrator – High-School SportsThis June, Laurentian University Sports Administration graduate Dave Makela will close out a 30-plus year career as athletic administrator for the Sudbury Board of Education, now the Rainbow District School Board. He has also served as a member of the executive committee of the Big Nickel Hockey Tournament and as Executive Director of the Sudbury Minor Hockey Association.
Doug Bonhomme: Administrator - Hockey
Doug Bonhomme has enjoyed a varied and lengthy career in hockey. A well-respected member of the Ontario Hockey League Central Scouting team for nearly 40 years, Bonhomme attended Clarkson University on a hockey scholarship.
Bonhomme coached a number of teams over the years, notably leading Cambrian College to the 1997 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship. He can still be found helping out at local minor hockey tournaments around Sudbury.
Sudbury Hardrocks / Sudbury Spartans: Norm Mayer Dynasty AwardCharter members of the Northern Ontario Rugby-Football Union in 1954, the Sudbury Hardrocks (so named until 1967, when they became the Sudbury Spartans) have remained a vibrant part of Sudbury’s summer football offering for over 70 years.
With 18 league championships to their credit, the Spartans have produced players who have excelled in university ranks in Canada and the United States. A handful of Spartans have moved on to play professional football. Equally important are the amateur adult players who dearly treasure their years as Spartans.
