A double overtime semi-final loss can be a bitter pill to swallow for a group of largely nine and ten year old girls.

It's a little easier to swallow when the bounce back is a bronze medal showing at provincials.

The Sudbury U11 BB Lady Wolves returned home recently with yet another banner to adorn the walls of Countryside #2 after finishing third at the recent OWHA Provincial Championships in Toronto, competing in a field of the 16 best teams in this grouping in Ontario.

The trend towards fewer games at provincials now forces teams to capture their four-team pool in order to advance to semi-final Sunday, with the local girls up to the task.

Goals by Amélie Thompson (game MVP), Sloan Maurice and Tory Thibault propelled Sudbury to a 3-1 win over the Orangeville Tigers in their only game of the day on Friday.

Saturday was "shut down defense" day for the U11 BB Lady Wolves, blanking the Toronto Leaside Wildcats 3-0 (hat trick from Danica Beaudry - game MVP) as well as the Burlington Barracudas (1-0 - Beaudry with breakaway goal in dying seconds).

Netminder Maeve Mahoney recorded a pair of shutouts for the Sudbury side with Avery Marshall earning game MVP honours versus the Barracudas.

The Lady Wolves trailed the Sunday semi 2-1 after the opening frame as Danica Beaudry squeezed a snipe between a pair of goals from a second Toronto Leaside Wildcats entry, then pulled even late in the second as Charlie May hit paydirt.

The score remained 2-2 through both the third period and the first overtime session before the Wildcats ended the drama early in period five as Sudbury goalie Maeve Mahoney garnered game MVP accolades.

Looking to salvage some hardware from their trip south, the local girls broke a scoreless bronze medal game opposite the London Devilettes, late in period two, as Tory Thibault converted on passes from Clara Savignac and Danica Beaudry, giving Sudbury a 1-0 lead.

With Maeve Mahoney holding the fort at the far end of the rink, the lead held up with Amélie Thompson netting an insurance empty-net goal just prior to the buzzer sounding, the Lady Wolves full measure for a 2-0 win.

The balance of the Sudbury U11 BB Lady Wolves roster encompasses Justine Battochio, Sienna Desloges, Quinn Dusick, Zoe Frappier, Zetha Harper, Edie Lamont, Elena Malafarina and Julianna Malafarina.

The team staff was led by head coach Phil Malafarina, with assistant coaches Randy Battochio, Alain Beaudry, Rob Dmytruk, Aaron Dusick, James Marshall, trainer Johanna Love, assistant trainer Lauren Malafarina and team manager Ashley Thibault all on board.
