Cubs back on track with back to back shutouts
2025-02-10

Back to back shutouts coming off a rare "two losses in three games" stretch definitely has the Greater Sudbury Cubs feeling like they are right back on track - especially given what was a very solid 2-0 outing against a top tier opponent in the Soo Eagles to kick off this run.

Last Thursday at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex, the Cubs benefitted from power play goals by Samuel Assinewai and Noah Kohan along with a 33-save performance from Karsen Chartier in taking down the visiting Eagles.

Sudbury scored in both the first and second periods and then successfully killed off a five-minute major in the third on route to win number 36 on the season as the team looked to their final ten games of regular season play.

Two nights later, the Cubs would score twice in each of the three periods of play, all while keeping the French River Rapids off the scoreboard, thus posting a 6-0 win in Noelville on Saturday night.

Defenseman and team captain Mason Chitaroni doubled his season goal output in a single encounter, burying the hat trick to show the way for the visitors from Sudbury.

Goals from Nolan Newton, Ben Harris and Samuel Assinewai rounded out the scoring while Noah Beaulne turned aside 20 shots between the pipes for the Cubs as the defending league champs outshot the Rapids 55-20.

The Cubs will need to bring their "A" game again this week as they play host to the Blind River Beavers (29-11-1-2) in Sudbury on Thursday and travel to the Lock City on Saturday to face the Soo Thunderbirds (22-20-1-2).
