A comfortable win caps off a grinding day for the Chill Blue Wave girls
2025-02-02

By the time their matchup with the Venom Vortex from Richmond Hill arrived late Saturday at the 15U Girls Challenge Cup – Trillium White D tournament two weeks ago, the Northern Chill Blue Wave 15U Girls had their fill of drama-filled matches that were going the distance, with the third and final set settled by a matter of mere points.

The Sudbury girls swept past the Vortex in straight sets (25-7, 25-11) to secure a fifth place finish in a field of nine teams, no longer interested in contesting a long, drawn out affair.

Those games were the order of the day in the morning as the Blue Wave took down the top-seeded North Bay Jr Lakers Rapids in three sets (25-15, 17-25, 15-13) but saw the tables turned in their very next outing against the Markham Revolution Ace, beaten 15-25, 25-21, 12-15, finishing second in Pool A.

Pitted against the Lanark United Aces in their quarter-final match, the northern girls would battle the top team in Pool C right down to the wire, falling to the crew that gathers talent from Carleton Place, Perth and the balance of Lanark County, 25-16, 14-25, 13-15.

With pride and a middle of the pack finish still on the line at Nipissing University, the team of Emma Aubé, Sovia Borota Thompson, Olivia Cormier, Danika Drolet, Hailey Villeneuve, Savannah Farinha, Jillian Fitzgerald, Alexie Houle, Ella Kolari, Jillian Martin, Isabel Toby, Macy Velcich, head coach Jason Radley, assistant coach Melanie Toby and team manager Melanie Franson dismantled the Vortex with ease.

Next Saturday (February 8th), the Northern Chill Blue Wave will play host to McGregor Cup – Trillium White E action at Laurentian University, with entries in town from the likes of Ottawa, Toronto and Sault Ste Marie.
