Both the Northern Chill (15U) Heat Wave and the Northern Chill (14U) Black Ice jumped the queue in impressive fashion last weekend in Orillia in what was a very productive day, from a local perspective, at the 15U Girls Challenge Cup – Championship D tournament.

Seeded second in the nine team event coming into action on Saturday morning, the Heat Wave ran the table, winning four straight matches before taking down the Barrie Elites Empire in the final hosted at Twin Lakes Secondary School.

The eventual gold medal winners needed three sets to dispose of the EVP Eagles – Surge from Oakville, 25-17, 22-25, 15-9, before sweeping past E381 (Etobicoke), 25-23, 25-15 in morning pool play.

On to the playoffs as the Heat Wave 15U Girls bested the Orillia Suns Sun Block in the quarter-finals (25-16, 25-14) as well as the Venom Cobras (Richmond Hill – 25-17, 25-18) in the semis. A well balanced final went the distance as the Sudbury squad prevailed over Barrie thanks to a scoresheet that read: 25-20, 23-25, 15-12.

“As coaches, we were super proud of the girls as two areas we made sure to clean up after our last 15U tournament was our serving and serve receive,” noted head coach James Gauvreau. “They all knew that if we did those two things well, trust our defense/offensive training, we would be rewarded.”

Hoisting the hardware when all was said and done were Willow Baillargeon, Kylie Breau, Rayen Cabezas, Morgan Gauvreau, Maya Chretien, Luella Circelli, Aviahna Cocchiola, Julia Moulaison, Brinley Evans, Lisa Ngouabe, Naima Bella Tverdal and Sara Labelle, with head coach James Gauvreau, assistant coach Jason Evans and team manager Heather Evans rounding out the staff.

Meanwhile, the U14 Black Ice girls took advantage of an open slot to play up an age group, seeded ninth coming him but exiting as the fourth place team following a bronze medal game loss.

The requisite nerves were evident early as the younger Chill girls couldn’t quite put it all together in the morning, beaten by both the Caspian Rush from Newmarket (23-25, 14-25) as well as the Barrie Elites Empire (15-25, 22-25).

Playoffs, however, were another matter altogether as the Black Ice gained some confidence with a 25-18, 25-20 victory over E381, then surprised the Orillia Suns Fire 21-25, 27-25, 16-14 in the round of eight.

Emotionally drained from the upset, the locals could not match a Barrie Elites squad that was firing on all cylinders, falling 21-25, 8-25. In a bronze medal matchup that could have gone either way, the Northern Chill Black Ice came up just a little short against Venom Cobras, 23-25, 22-25.

Making the successful jump in play in Orillia were Black Ice teammates Truleigh Boivin, Ivana Coluzzi, Nova Debassige, Emma DeMarchi, Adèle Gervais, Piper Hamilton-Bachiu, Sophie Marshall, Reese Morris, Addison Peplinski, Grace Perron, Eliza Rybiak and Makenzie Switzer.
