No use calling the out of town teams - they haven't found a way to slow down the Horizon Aigles junior girls basketball crew either.
Despite rostering a squad the includes only three returning grade ten athletes, the Aigles remain the class of the SDSSAA Division I junior girls loop, boasting a record of 6-0, with playoffs set to start next week.
The Aigles also went undefeated in laying claim to the Keera Daniels Scarlett & Gold Tournament earlier this month in North Bay, taking down, in succession, the host Chippewa Raiders (39-32), Kirkland Lake District Composite (31-23), the West Ferris Trojans (44-23) and the St Joseph Scollard Hall Bears (52-24) in the final.
"Our defense is very good; we get a lot of steals and rebounds," noted 14 year-old grade nine post, Sophie Roy. "We've worked a lot on offensive plays and defensive ones in practice."
"I like the offensive ones better because I get to learn different moves with the ball."
Not only do the Aigles swarm the ball defensively, they somehow manage to do so without often encountering issues with a large number of fouls.
"You don't want to reach much," explained Roy. "Those are easy fouls to get called on. You want to keep your hands up if they are trying to shoot or pass."
Looking to repeat as SDSSAA champs, the Horizon roster also benefits from the valuable contributions of Chloé Carrier, Aviahna Cocchiola, Asyah Dockery, Evie Drozdowsky, Alexa Goulard, Sophie Lachance, Taryn Lavigne, Jillian Martin, Makenna Messier, Mya Sauvé and Reese Waltenbury, all under the guidance of coaches Ghislain Roy and Pierre Bernard.
