Media notices of Sudbury Five signings and re-signings are coming fast and furious now that October has arrived.
With any luck, perhaps that is the same way that the talent assembled under the direction of head coach / GM Logan Stutz will play: fast and furious.
Newcomers to the team include 27 year-old 6'9" forward Lewis Djonkam from Springfield (Virginia) and Rockaway Beach (New York) native Charlie Marquardt, a 29 year-old 6'3" guard.
Having played NCAA Division I basketball at Morgan State University (Baltimore, Maryland), Djonkam made his way to the Newfoundland Rogues of the BSL (Basketball Super League), appearing in 37 games.
Marquardt spent four years with the Molloy University Lions (NCAA Div II - Rockville Centre, N.Y.), named to the ECC (East Coast Conference) first all-star team in his final year (2016-2017).
Following a very brief stint with the Long Island Nets (G-League), Marquardt made his way overseas, suiting up at various times with teams in Czechia (Czech Republic), Albania, Germany, Luxembourg and Italy.
In 2023-2024, Marquardt was the leading scorer with the Frederick Flying Cows (Frederick, Maryland) of the TBL (The Basketball League), a squad that he will re-join at the conclusion of the Sudbury Five 2024-2025 season.
A pair of familiar faces are also back in the fold with the news that both Duane Notice, an Etobicoke native who enters his third season with the Five as well as shooting guard Ja'Myrin Jackson, acquired from the Windsor Express last February, have both committed to the Five.
In returning both Notice (13.9 points per game) and Jackson (19.0 ppg), the Five can build around a pair of consistent offensive contributors as they look towards a 2024-2025 campaign that begins more than a month earlier than one year ago.
The home opener for the Sudbury Five comes on (Saturday) November 23rd, with the Montreal Tundra in town.
