Maybe John Mealin will slow down in his eighties.
Just don't bet on it.
At the ripe old age of 78, Mealin was recently awarded his coveted Black Belt in karate at the 2024 Shintani Wado Kai Karate Symposium on Grasshopper Island.
"When most people are thinking of taking it easy, I decided to kick things up a notch," quipped Mealin. "Karate isn't just about self-defense; it's about building confidence, discipline, perseverance - and building a strong sense of community."
After years of working under the guidance of Sensei Brodie Hicks (Peterborough Karate Club), Mealin would make the move to Sudbury, post-Covid, joining forces with Sensei Rick Pilon, chief instructor at the Hanmer Shintani Wado Kai Karate Club.
Overcoming the natural obstacles that his age presented, Mealin would emerge from a seven-hour black belt pre-grading session in April, his resilience and determination undaunted.
"Nobody ever told me I was too old to start - and the challenge only motivated me more," he said. "It's not just about personal growth. It's about supporting others and being part of the team."
On July 13th on Rice Lake, Mealin was joined by more than sixty fellow karate enthusiasts, one and all celebrating their camaraderie and shared passion.
Following the ceremony, he turned his gaze to the future.
"As long as I can train, I'll keep going," Mealin affirmed. "There's more to learn, more challenges to conquer and more studentsto inspire."
Age is, indeed, just a number.
