The volleyball equivalent to hockey overtime drama occurs when a set extends beyond 25 points, typically, or 15 points when it’s a deciding set.
This, apparently, is when the Northern Chill White Ice 13U girls truly excel.
Going above and beyond at a couple of critical junctures at the recent OVA (Ontario Volleyball Association) Provincial Championships allowed the Sudbury girls to emerge as Division 4 Tier 2 bronze medal winners in the 6v6 event.
The locals were on the wrong end of a 21-25, 19-25 opening game setback at the hands of the Durham Rebels but rebounded nicely to topple both the North Bay Lakers Tsunami (25-19, 25-8) and E381 from Etobicoke (19-25, 25-17, 15-8).
A tough 25-22, 15-25, 10-15 loss to LVC (London Volleyball Club) to open day two absolutely required a quick counter with the White Ice digging deep in outlasting the Shockwave Sharks from Toronto, 24-26, 25-16, 17-15.
The win allowed the northern crew the chance to remain in the middle of the pack seedings come time for day three elimination games, even after dropping their final preliminary match to the Wildcats Jaguars from Markham, 13-25, 16-25.
Slotted right in the middle of the group of eight, the White Ice advanced to the final four thanks to a 25-21, 25-21 sweep of the Peterborough Thunder. The Durham Attack Meteors from Oshawa would relegate the Chill to the bronze medal game, defeating the northern girls 25-9, 21-25, 15-10, but once again, coach Sheri Gazzola and company would bounce back.
Working a little overtime, the White Ice nine would get the better of E381 for a second time, walking off with a 30-28, 25-20 victory.
