Three-way tie for first place in junior soccer early
2024-04-29

The weather might not be ideal but an early start to the SDSSAA soccer season is pretty much always a good thing in the eyes of coaches and players alike who try and make the best of a very abbreviated runway for preparation, local competition and provincials.

Some teams kicked off play on April 22nd this year, with Second Division action set to launch this week. Following are some quick updates from a few of the divisions that have begun play:

Junior Boys

The league that has seldom seen more than two or three entries is now home to eight teams, with a couple of those squads looking very strong out of the gate. The St Benedict Bears, St Charles College Cardinals and Lo-Ellen Park Knights all have two wins under their belts in the early going.

St Benedict Bears tripled the Lockerby Vikings 3-1 in their curtain-raising affair as Connor Nicholson, Domingo Quintana and Jason Uloghobui all found the back of the net for the winners.

Just a couple of days later, St Benedict were showcasing the depth of their offensive talent as Mauro Cusinato and Pablo Patino added their names to the goal scoring parade while keeper Noah Duguay registered his first shutout of the season.

The St Charles College Cardinals followed a very similar pathway, edging the Confederation Chargers 2-1 on goals from Moyo Olusola-Kuteyi and Logan Remiekis last week and blanked the Lasalle Lancers 3-0 earlier today to pull into the three way tie for first place.

The Lo-Ellen Park Knights have unleashed the most firepower to date, posting a 5-0 whitewash of Lasalle as well as hitting the scoreboard with another five-spot on Sunday in a 5-2 win over Bishop Carter.
