U19 Storm elevate their play following divisional promotion
2024-04-11

The push continues for the Sudbury U19 Storm girls.

Posting a record of 4-2 while competing in OBL (Ontario Basketball League) Division E play, the locals earned a promotion up one level, saddled with a pair of close losses as the GSBA reps adjust to a touch tougher competition.

Following a 1-1 weekend to start the season prior to Christmas, the Storm duplicated that result in Unionville in January, dropping a 58-41 decision to the Markham Elite before upending the Huntsville Hurricanes 58-40.

Back on the road a few weeks later, Sudbury again bested Huntsville, 58-34 this time around as Kayley Lemaire paced the attack with a 21-point performance, with Breanna Lemaire and Angel Allonce chipping in with nine and eight points respectively.

Featuring a shutdown defense that limited their opponents to single digit first half points, the Storm ran over the London Royals 57-17 in game two as Erika Young stepped up big time, netting 14 points for the winners.

Their first game in Division D would see the Storm overcome a 25-7 half-time deficit, surging in the final 16 minutes but still coming up a little short, beaten 38-32 by the DC (Durham City) Chameleons.

Kayley Lemaire (13 pts) and Angel Allonce (9) provided a nice one-two punch on the attack for the northern squad while Ashley Boulard was among the team leaders in rebounds, recording six in the contest.

Coach Jamie Lamontagne and company kept things closer early in their final outing opposite the Etobicoke Thunder but ultimately succumbed, 43-37 as Ashley Boulard (8), Kayley Lemaire (7), Angel Allonce (7) and Arianne Lamontagne (5) were all front and centre on the attack at various times for the Storm.

The team now prepares for one final weekend of OBL play along with a end of the year tournament leading into provincials. The remainder of the Sudbury U19 Storm roster is comprised of Naomi Burrows, Alexia Clement, Hannah Burton, Keena Richards, Marissa Laforge, Brooke Waltenbury and assistant coach Dan Young.
