Chalk up a second tournament win on the year for the Nickel City U11 AA Sons who pulled one out of the fire in the final of the Josh Bailey Classic last month, hosted by the Clarington Toros.
The locals looked to be the class of the tournament through play on Friday and Saturday, posting a 4-0 round robin record with victories over the host Clarington Toros (4-0), the Northumberland Nighthawks (10-2), the North Durham Warriors (3-0) and Whitby Wildcats (3-1).
Even semi-final action could not slow down the northern express as the Sons doubled their earlier win with a 6-0 shellacking of the North Durham Warriors on Sunday morning.
Ironically, this pitted them in the gold medal encounter against the only team they had yet to face in the field of six entries - the London Jr Knights - Green, a squad that advanced to the final after edging the Whitby Wildcats 4-3.
Easily the stiffest test they would face, Nickel City trailed 1-0 with less than a minute to play when Reed Robichaud netted the equalizer with the goalie pulled in favour of an extra attacker and just 39 seconds showing on the clock.
A three on three overtime session left the weary combattants still deadlocked at 1-1, giving way to two on two hockey when Ben Sabourin netted the tournament winning tally, the Sons adding this banner to another they captured back in the fall at the Kitchener Oktoberfest.
The Nickel City U11 AA roster also includes Chase Morrell, Trent Morris, Tyler Suomu, Karson Ferguson, Coltan Walker, Jarrett Marshall, Coen Larochelle, Kaesen Adair, Carter Meunier, Maddox Matthews, Tate Cunningham, Jase Halas, Maximus Panamick and Clark Montgomery.
Team staff is comprised of coaches Darryl Sabourin, Brendan Adair, Ben Robichaud, Tom Cunningham and team manager Megan Cunningham.
