U18 Lady Wolves enjoy an outstanding weekend on the road
2024-01-31

This past weekend was one of the mildest late January stretches that has been seen in quite some time - and still the trio of Sudbury U18 Lady Wolves' teams were just fine being out of town.

Given that the local reps posted a combined 8-0-1 record on the road over the course of Saturday and Sunday, they can certainly be forgiven in not feeling that they missed out on a whole lot back at home.

Needing to put together a good stretch of hockey to try and secure a playoff berth, the Sudbury U18 AA Lady Wolves secured seven of the eight points that were up for grabs in their four-game set.

The team set the tone Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 win over the Caledon Coyotes as both Jillian Landry and Laryssa Mayer found the back of the net while goaltender Stevie Levesque made it stand with the shutout.

Following in her footsteps, Sarah McKechnie was an absolute wall in blanking the Etobicoke Dolphins 1-0 in game two, with Ayla Lagace providing the offensive support.

The Sudbury attack ramped up a little on Sunday morning as goals from Maija Potvin, Kynlee Cresswell and Payton Stos propelled the U18 AA girls to a 3-1 win over the New Tecumseth Royals.

The northern reps just narrowly missed out on a four game sweep, earning a 1-1 draw with the Central York Panthers thanks to a tally from Danika Gray and a handful of key stops from netminder McKechnie.

Trailing only the Central York Panthers (14-4-3) in U18 A Central North standings but holding five games in hand, the Sudbury U18 A Lady Wolves took both ends of a Saturday/Sunday matchup with the North York Storm, doing so without allowing a single goal against.

Chloe Leduc buried the game-winner in a 1-0 win as Maya Flores and Sutton Morin drew assists on the play while Leah Murphy turned aside everything directed her way between the pipes for Sudbury.

Her puck-stopping partner enjoyed a little more breathing room in game two as a shutout from Elsa Blum was accompanied by snipes from Kendra Cole, C.J. Pardy, Maia Hammell, Maya Flores and Chloe Leduc in a comfortable 5-0 triumph.

The team is back in action with a three game set to start February, squeezing in a Saturday evening battle with the Barrie Sharks between a pair of encounters with the North Simcoe Capitals.

Meanwhile in U18 BB action, the Sudbury U18 BB Lady Wolves are duking it out with the North Bay Junior Lakers for top spot in their Central North grouping, adding three more "W's" to the win column following play last weekend.

A two-goal effort from Izabel Courville powered the locals past the Orillia Hawks 4-0 in game one as Mya Massimiliano and Isabelle Lanteigne joined her on the scoresheet while Macey Gaudin-Blanchette pitched the shutout.

Same score in game two, this time over the North Simcoe Capitals as Mya Massimiliano scores in a second straight game and welcomes teammates Reese Williamson, Nyssa Solomon and Gabrielle Foreshew to the scoresheet as well, with Daniela Grottoli posting the goose-egg.

A closer contest on Sunday finds the balanced Lady Wolves' attack now featuring Breeanna Sullivan and Amanda Syncox in a 2-1 win over Orillia.

"I was a great weekend for the girls," noted head coach Paul Courville. "They came out strong and hungry for the wins, played hard and competed as a team and earned three well-deserved wins."

The Sudbury U18 BB Lady Wolves also have three more games to look forward to on February 3rd and 4th, with a pair on Saturday opposite the Barrie Sharks and a final outing the next day with the Central York Panthers.
