Time after time, the Lo-Ellen Park Knights intermediate girls volleyball team tried to put a little distance between themselves and their opponents at the Rainbow Board final Wednesday at CVDCS (Chelmsford Valley District Composite School).

And time after time, the C.R. Judd Jaguars answered.

Facing the south-end powerhouse with a lineup that included all three of the grade 8 girls that are enrolled in the Capreol elementary public school, the Jaguars took the Knights to four sets, two of which extended beyond the 25-point plateau.

In the end, Lo-Ellen would walk off as city champions, earning a hard fought 20-25, 29-27, 25-17, 26-24 victory over Judd.

"We knew that it was going to be a challenge," said Sunny Dunlop-Bassett, a grade 8 student at Lo-Ellen Park. "Our coach (Haley Elsner) wanted us to have fun and try our best to win."

Like most of the Knights lineup, Dunlop-Bassett splits her time between multiple sports.

"Volleyball is not my main sport; I play basketball and sometimes tennis," she said. "This is somewhere in the middle. It can be hard to get everyone out to practice, but we're all comfortable being around each other and we can play together, which makes it easier."

While C.R. Judd would have the advantage defensively and with some of the finer nuances of the sport, Lo-Ellen could look to their powerful attack to even the score, over and over.

"Honestly, I think that our offense is probably better for us," said Dunlop-Bassett. "We have a lot of great hitters on this team, especially Lia (middle Lia Gallo), and a really good setter, so it just works out well."

Rounding out the Lo-Ellen roster are Ella Kolari, Abigail Kei, Vienna Corsi, Lia Paille, Mattia Mullen, Ellie Sauve, Sadie Frantz, Kensington Welsh, Ryan Snow, Ella Gatien and Violet Simon.

The silver medal winning team featured Sophie Marshall, JayLynn Kring, Payton Ramsey, Bree-Lynn Strickland, Destiney Brennan, Morgan Gauvreau, Charlie Elvidge-Pepin, Emily-Mae Young and head coach Craig Thomson.

The boys final would see the Lasalle Lancers and Northeastern Cougars meet for the umpteeth time, with the latter still not able to get the better of the former as Lasalle posted a 3-0 sweep by scores of 25-21, 25-17,25-18.

Walking away with volleyball gold medals were Yasir Ariji, Jacob Brunet, Mason Jaculak, Travis Dickie, Bradley Eady, Quentin Hallock, Seamus Murphy, Warner Bain, Tavaris Montgomery and coach Bryan Dobson, with the Dale Beausoleil led team of Max Ranger, Budhik Sharma, Liam O'Donnell, A.J. Martin, Clade McDowell, Ben Bray-Humeniuk, Caleb Zakamarko, Reid Cayer, Griffin Webber and assistant coach Miss Paige coming up just a little bit short.
