It may have taken the Greater Sudbury Cubs the better part of two periods to get out from under their summer legs, but once they did, the local NOJHL crew were flashing the signs that helped lead them to an appearance in the West Division finals last year.
Two goal performances from Lucas Antonioni (U18 AAA Wolves last year) and Brock Houser (Welland Jr Canadians) helped the Cubs overcome a 4-0 deficit and register a 6-5 win over the Elliot Lake Vikings in pre-season action on Friday.
Rounding out the scoring for Sudbury were veteran Oliver Smith and trade acquisition Ben Lacroix (Espanola Paper Kings) while Dylan Leslie (2), Anthony Bertrand, Aaron Shanks and Ryan Daponte countered for the Vikes.
The same two teams will meet again Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex before the Cubs get things going for real with regular season home encounters set for Thursday (Sept 7th vs the Hearst Lumberjacks) and Friday (Sept 8th vs the Timmins Rock).
Coach Darryl Moxam and company will play eight league games in the month of September with no less than seven of those matchups on home ice.
