June and July might seem like the ideal time for teenagers to relax - just not if you are one of the very devoted members of the Nickel City Aquatics.

The local swim club logged no less than three different meets in the month of June along while sending another six athletes out to the east coast in July as the NCA wrapped up the 2023-2024 season in the process.

Competing in the 2023 Age Group International at the Etobicoke Olympium at the very beginning of June, Jayda Hartley and Ava St Martin combined to post five new personal best times.

Hartley lowered her PB clockings in the 50m and 100m freestyle as well as the 200m backstroke while St Martin reached a new standard for both her 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke events.

Two weeks later, NCA swimmers were back in action at the 2023 Summer Ontario Youth-Junior LC Championships as club veterans Shane Clapham and James Mongeon both qualified for finals in the highly competitive meet.

Mongeon finished just off the podium in the 200m butterfly, touching the wall in a time of 2:25.64, good enough for four place while Clapham slid into the top ten with a ninth place performance in the 100m breaststroke (1:12.08).

Closing out a very busy month, the NCA delegation was even larger at the 2023 Bad June Outdoor LC Invitational which featured a nice number of impressive races for the locals:

Fletcher Loken: a pair of top tens on his resume (9th in 200m IM - 3:31.26; 10th in 50m back - 43.57)
Julian Luoma: three top tens on his resume (7th in 200m IM - 3:07.36; 10th in 50m freestyle - 30.88; 10th in 200m freestyle - 2:40.06)
Noah McGregor: a pair of top tens on his resume - both in the top seven (5th in 200m backstroke - 3:07.04; 7th in 200m IM - 3:24.30)
Quinn Cecchetto: four new personal best times - 50m, 100m & 200m breaststroke; 100m freestyle
Annalie Jarvi: top ten in the 200m backstroke - 9th in a time of 3:10.54
Lainna Munro: a new personal best in the 50m freestyle
James Mongeon: three top tens (4th in 200m backstroke - 2:34.37; 5th in the 50m backstroke - 33.31; 9th in 200m butterfly - 1:04.92

In July, coach Linda Tenhunen accompanied a half dozen of her NCA swimmers to the Ken Dunn Long Course Nova Scotia Provincial Meet, with Mongeon hitting the podium in all three of his butterfly events.

With times of 2:22.46 (200m), 1:01.90 (100m) and 28.05 (50m), Mongeon earned a silver and a pair of bronze medals to show the way for NCA.

Brooke Herranen had a breakout performance at her first provincial meet, reaching no less than four separate finals.

After blistering her way to a 4th place finish in the 50m butterfly (31.19), Herranen followed up with very nice times in the 50m breaststroke (6th - 38.74), the 100m breaststroke (7th - 1:26:46) and the 200m breaststroke (6th - 3:06.59).

The women's 4 X 100m individual medley relay team were 11th in their first ever relay event, the quartet incorporating the talents of Maddie Veevers, Ava St Martin, Brooke Herranen and Jayda Hartley.
