A season to remember would come to an end earlier this month for the Sudbury U15 Jam Girls - but what an end to the season it was.

Entering Basketball Ontario Provincials as the #1 seeded team within the OBLX circuit, the locals looked very much the part of the favourites in Pool play, posting a 3-0 record with wins over Transway (68-49), Brantford CYO (41-33) and Oakville Vytis (50-35).

Though the one-two punch of Sophie Miller and Sarah Guignard accounted for much of the scoring, key baskets right across the lineup combined with defensive excellence from every single player on the roster allowed the two scorers to flourish.

The tandem combined for 35 points split near evenly in game one while Allissia Vallilee was dishing out assists left and right, often courtesy of her trademark steals on the defensive end of the court. When Transway focused on the dynamic duo, Paige Dawson and Kaylee Prevost-Patterson hot several post-up jumpers at big times.

Miller netted 20 points against Brantford, Guignard added 14 and Prevost-Patterson chipped in with five, including a critical three-pointer down the stretch in game two with the top two right back to their game one magic in the preliminary round finale against Oakville, getting back to 35 combined points, on the nose, once again.

Throw in a huge game on the boards for Guignard, racking up 15 rebounds, and a pair of well-timed transition layups in the third quarter from Sophie Montgomery that nailed the coffin for the Vytis and one had the makings of a Jam time firing on all cylinders just as the playoff round arrived.

The stiffest test of the weekend for the Jam likely came courtesy of the Milton Stags in the semi-final encounter. The athleticism and on the ball relentlessness of the Stags defense would give Milton a ten point lead at the half, 24-14.

But just as they had all year, the Sudbury girls were up to the challenge, recording a 15-2 run in the third quarter and never looking back as Guignard (15 pts) and Miller (14) complementing nicely by Prevost-Patterson, who finished with eight points including a pair of baskets from distance as part of that third quarter run, the scoreboard reading 41-33 for the Jam in the end.

With that test behind them, the northern reps unveiled their most complete game of the tournament, a combination of balanced scoring (Miller-13; Guignard-9; Michaela Tripp-8; Prevost-Patterson-5) and stifling defense to take down the number two seeded K-W Vipers 39-28.

With Guignard in some foul trouble early, Brooke Waltenbury stepped up big time, mixing in an impressive effort in tight to the basket with eight key boards. Down the stretch, the Jam relied on their entire bench as Kamryn Newell, McKenna Mende and Sophie Montgomery came through with key minutes. consistently winning the battle for the ball off the boards.

The staff who helped guide the team through a 27-0 season long run that included a tournament victory (IEM AAA Tournament) and OBLX Pool A crown included head coach Chris Miller and assistant coaches John Dawson and Stephen Montgomery.
