Sudbury Five stumble on the road ahead of final regular season outing
2023-05-01

The Sudbury Five will have one final chance to turn their fortunes around before the start of playoffs.

After enjoying a thoroughly successful season that sees the local basketball crew sporting a record of 22-8 (overall) and 14-7 in NBLC (National Basketball League of Canada) conference play, the Five are looking to snap a two game losing skid with their final regular season encounter of the year.

The Five were beaten by both the Windsor Express (111-110 on Friday) and the K-W Titans (100-78 on Saturday) as they prepare to play host to the London Lightning Tuesday night in Sudbury.

Coach Logan Stutz and company are set to open post-season play this coming Friday and Saturday (May 5th & 6th), with Windsor as the likely opponent.

The Express benefitted from a 37-19 fourth quarter rally last Friday to get past the Five, with the visitors enjoying a 91-74 after three quarters of play.

A pair of free throws by Tanner Stuckman with six seconds to play would prove to be the margin of victory after Braylon Rayson nailed his fourth three-point basket of the game nine seconds earlier.

Rayson and Montell McRae topped all Sudbury scorers with 26 points each, with Jeremy Harris close behind at 23. Latin Davis showed the way for the winners with a 30-point effort, with Justin Moss (21), Ja'Myrin Jackson (20) and Stuckman (14) also contributing nicely on the attack for the Express.

The next night in Kitchener-Waterloo, the Titans grabbed control from the start, up 31-18 after 12 minutes of play and increasing that lead over the course of the next two quarters (60-37 at the half; 80-51 after 3Q) before the Five made things a little more respectable in the fourth.

Mike Poole (25) and Sam Akano (21) gave the K-W crew a nice one-two punch on a night when only one of their starters saw the court for more than 25 minutes of play. Joel Kindred (12), Kedar Edwards (10) and Jaquan Lightfoot (10) were also in the mix, offensively speaking, for the homeside.

With Braylon Rayson out of the lineup, the Five shot just 13.8% from three point land (4-29) and only slightly better overall from the field (30-83 = 36.1%). That said, 82.4% from the charity stripes is a better than average output for the northern reps.

A.J. Mosby Jr finished with 18 points, tops for the visitors, followed by Jeremy Harris (15), Duane Notice (11) and Evan Harris (10) as the Five get set for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday.
