The names are always a big part of the story at the annual SDSSAA Badminton Championships, but in 2023 at least, the spotlight would shine equally as much on the numbers.

A total of 437 participants established a new high water mark for the event, surpassing the 2022 total of 364 entries by more than 20%.

Thanks to the ability to use three separate facilities in St Benedict, Macdonald-Cartier and Lasalle Secondary, the competition was completed in a single day, with those who have advanced now preparing for the NOSSA Championships this coming weekend (April 28th/29th) in North Bay.

Club veterans Gillian Obradovich (Lockerby) and Matteo Rocca (Lo-Ellen) earned top honours in senior singles play as representatives of five separate schools emerged as gold medal winners in the eldest of the SDSSAA divisions.

In fact, a grand total of eight schools could lay claim to producing city champions this year, with the Rivières-des-Francais Muskies and St Charles College Cardinals boasting three top finishers apiece.

Rounding out the listing of those earning bragging rights in senior doubles action were Ashley Touchette and Chloee Beaulieu (Rivières-des-Francais - Girls Doubles), Christian Munch and Jérémie Lemieux (Collège Notre-Dame - Boys Doubles) and defending champions Farrah Farstad and Blake Rosener (St Charles College - Mixed Doubles).
