Nickel City swimmers in fine form in North Bay and Markham
2023-04-22

The long-course swim season is in full groove as we near the month of May, with basically all members of the Nickel City Aquatics busy with one meet or another this month - and plenty still to come.

A total of 44 NCA swimmers were in North Bay to kick off the month with the NEOR 2 Invitational, the crew returning back to Sudbury with a total of forty medals, including 13 gold medal first place finishes.

Jayda Hartley (13 & Over) topped her heat in the 200m freestyle, 200 IM and 100m freestyle, with Brooke Herranen (13 & Over) doing the same in the mixed 13-14 medley relay (200m), as well as the 800m freestyle and the 100m butterfly.

Adam Tompsett (12 & Under) doubled up, capturing both the 50m backstroke and 100m IM while James Ford (12 & Under - 200m backstroke), Annalie Jarvi (Mixed 13-14 - Medley Relay - 200m), Brendan Kingshott (12 & Under - 100m freestyle), Lucas Roberts (Mixed 13-14 - Medley Relay - 200m) and David Tompsett (Mixed 13-14 - Medley Relay) walked off with one gold medal apiece.

Two weeks later, a team of nine were representing NCA at the Mallards Long-Course Challenge - 2023 at the Markham PanAm Centre, with third place finishes by both Tommasi Deni (age 19 - 100m butterfly - 1:01.29; 50m butterfly - 27.25) and Shane Clapham (age 16 - 200m breaststroke - 2:42.85) showing the way for the Sudbury crew.

Kalle Gainer, Jayda Hartley, James Mongeon, Lainna Munro, Isabella Pandolfo, Ava St. Martin and Madison Veevers also raced at the event as the Nickel City Aquatics' youngsters prepare for a Top Fish Meet this weekend.

More importantly, the club has already raised more than $8000 through their Swim-A-Thon set for April 26th, with a small pack of senior athletes heading to Windsor in early May, site of the Amanda Reason Long-Course Invitational.
