Dominic Reale has been known to make an astute sports pick or two over the years.
Now, he's betting on his beloved Boston Bruins to make a handful of his clients at Pro Am Sports Excellence very happy in the spring.
Based loosely around the well-publicized promotion that would see businessman Jim "Mattress Mac" McIngvale award $70 million in free furniture - offset by $75 million in winnings when the Houston Astros claimed the World Series in November, Reale is offering a similar proposition on his "Beantown Boys".
Spend a minimum of $400 on in-store purchases (excludes skate sharpening packages, ticket sales and team/corporate apparel) between now and April 13th (2023) and receive the complete cost of your pruchase reimbursed if it is in fact the Bruins hoisting Lord Stanley's mug come the end of the NHL playoffs.
For the man who has run sports pools and wagered many a dollar over the years, the fit with the Pro Am Pics campaign seemed only too natural.
"I got the nicknames "Picks" when I was in high-school, just because I was setting up a lot of pools and such; the nickname actually got shortened from Pickles to Picks," said Reale. "Most of my best friends still refer to me that way."
"I play hockey on Tuesday nights and we were talking after a game about the whole Astros thing, made a few jokes about it. I mentioned it to Dawson (his son and a graduate of the L.U. Sports Administration program) and I could see the wheels spinning."
With Boston leading the entire NHL with a record of 24-4-2 at the moment, this seemed as good a time as any to give the venture a shot - even if the Reales went in somewhat unsure of exactly what kind of traction it might garner.
"I really didn't know how many of our customers might spend the extra money," said store owner Dominic Reale. "You might get some people who bump up their purchase a little, just to get over the $400 mark."
"We might get more sales if the Bruins are still in first place on April 1st," Reale added, with perhaps a bit of a nervous laugh.
Similar to Mattress Mac, Reale is will buttress himself via the various sports books, though with the Bruins moving from 9-1 odds to begin the year to their current level of 6-1 or so, that option is becoming more costly by the day.
"We can't turn back now," said Reale with a smile, noting that the best summer for his company came in 2011 - the last time the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup.
