Goaltender Jacob Bradley was doing his thing, stopping most everything that was coming his way.

Thankfully, his teammates were being pretty darn opportunistic at the other end of the rink.

Despite being badly outshot in the opening period of play Tuesday night at the Chelmsford Arena, the Nickel City U15AAA Sons jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the buzzer sounded to end the first, paving the way to a 5-1 win over the Sudbury U15AAA Nickel Capitals in NOHL action.

The onslaught started early as Kygen Richer ripped a seeing-eye shot from the point under three minutes in, with Anthony Bertrand doubling the advantage midway through the frame.

A costly turnover would see Liam Nootchtai convert with 2:14 to play, with Nolan Schiewek making it 4-0 with the only goal of period two, finishing off a three-way passing play which also included Corey Lacroix and Nolan Cardinal.

Kyle Navarro (Sudbury) and Corey Lacroix (Nickel City) traded power play goals in the third as Bradley finished the evening with 31 saves, helping his team improve to 1-4-1, chalking up a much needed victory against a local opponent.

"We haven't won many games and we really wanted to win this game tonight, so we really got hyped and went out there and did our best," said Bradley. "We get a little more pumped up (playing Sudbury) because they're kind of like our local rivals."

The Sons will play host to the North Bay Trappers this coming weekend for a two game set before preparing to travel south to attend the Vaughan Kings Classic from December 10th to the 12th.

Nickel City find themselves in a division with Bigby Coffee (West Michigan), the Whitby Wildcats, Soo Jr Greyhounds and the Don Mills Flyers. "We're playing some of the top teams in Ontario so we just have to get ready, to make sure we are ready for them," noted Bradley.

In fact, both local teams will be hitting the road as the U15AAA Nickel Caps participate in the 29th Annual Hamilton Jr Bulldogs AAA Hockey Classic, with play kicking off on Friday.

The Sudbury lads will open with the host Hamilton Jr Bulldogs, followed by the Ajax Pickering Raiders, Elgin Middlesex Chiefs and Toronto Red Wings.
