Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2020-2021 unveiled

There hasn’t necessarily been a whole lot to celebrate in the world of local sports these past twelve months. Hopefully, the announcement of the Greater Sudbury Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2020/2021 will bring a smile to the face of many who appreciate the long, rich history of sport in the nickel city.

No less than five Olympians headline an impressive group of nine individuals, a set of siblings, as well as a legendary local sports team.

Jim Logan (hockey - Cortina d’Ampezza - 1956), John Beedell (sprint canoe - Rome - 1960), Gary Trevisiol (cycling - Los Angeles - 1984), Robert Esmie (track & field - Atlanta - 1996) and Tessa Bonhomme (hockey - Vancouver - 2010) are among the group which also welcomes the inclusion of the inaugural Norm Mayer Memorial Sports Dynasty induction.

The Capreol Fastball Mazzucas will be the first to fill that slot, as an organization, recognized for years of excellence on the diamonds that would culminate with several provincial championship banners for teams representing the northern railway town.

Rounding out the Class of 2020/2021 are:

Gary Foy - nordic and alpine ski - Builder

The Fielding Brothers - Carmen, Cliff and Cecil - boxing - Builders

Christine Jaworski - arm-wrestling - Athlete

Brent Hatton - golf - Athlete

Terry Crisp - hockey - Athlete/Coach

Given the current pandemic, the decision has been made to delay the annual Sports Celebrity Dinner until such a time that the local sports community might be able to safely gather to celebrate in larger numbers.
