It’s likely a pretty safe bet that
Allison Adams may be the only high-school volleyball player in town
first introduced to the sport in earnest on the beaches of Mexico. It’s
a quirky fact that both the Marymount Regals and Northern Chill are
thankful for these days.
While vacationing on a family trip in Grade 5, Adams came across a
steady stream of beach volleyball games, a sport she quickly took a
liking to during her short stay. Upon returning to George Vanier in
Lively, the talented 16 year-old found the same passion developing for
the indoor game.
“It all came pretty naturally” said Adams of the sport that she says
provide an important outlet. “After a rough day at school, I can’t wait
to get out on the volleyball court – it’s honestly my passion.” A
natural at power, Adams explains that the ability to swing hard and
avoid the block are among the keys at her position.
“In a tough game, I’m often just in a zone” adds Adams, noting that she
most often relies on her natural instincts rather than trying to glance
at where opposing blockers might be setting. After enjoying a very
challenging junior season in her first year at Marymount, Adams noted a
slight drop in the overall competition as the Regals pounded their way
to both city and NOSSA championships.
Thankfully, club play with the Northern Chill U-16 girls has proven to
be a wonderful venue for increased competition for both Adams as well as
her Regals teammate and constant court sidekick, Katrina Hickey. “We’re
really excited about playing senior next year – I love playing good
ball” admits Adams.
Down the road, Adams would like to play varsity volleyball as she keeps
her eyes open to follow in the footsteps of a handful of Sudbury female
volleyballers who have trekked south of the border to ply their trade.
“That has always been one of my dreams, but it’s going to be tough.”
Almost as tough as successfully blocking Allison Adams perhaps.
