It’s not the least bit unusual. A
tradition that sees younger siblings following in the footsteps of older
brothers and sisters in making their choice of secondary schools. Ryan
Filipovic took it one step further, heeding his brother’s advice and
immersing himself in the soccer tradition that is St Charles College.
“My brother (Mathew) had played
for the soccer team and he said it was a lot of fun”, noted Filipovic.
And so despite having set aside his soccer career in Sudburnia in order
to accommodate family summer travel plans a few years back, Ryan
Filipovic resumed his involvement as a member of the Cardinals.
“It took a few games to
feel comfortable, but I feel like I’m a bit more confident on the field
now…and I’ve made a lot of friends”, he acknowledges. A graduate of St
Paul’s, Filipovic was quite involved in athletics at the elementary
level, playing basketball among other activities.
And he hopes to bring a
degree of athleticism to his tenure at St Charles, including a sport
that is not necessarily among the more popular sign ups. “My family on
my dad’s side are really into tennis”, he says.
But make no mistake –
it’s clearly on the soccer pitch that Filipovic would like to see he and
his teammates excel. “St Charles has a tradition of winning quite a few
Junior and Senior championships. I would like to help keep that legacy
going.”
Of course, it doesn’t
hurt that the Grade 10 student tends to follow a pretty basic mantra
when he undertakes any foray into the field of sports. “You can always
get better…you can always improve”, states Filipovic.
As for future plans
beyond the walls of S.C.C., the academically inclined teenager doesn’t
necessarily know exactly what he wants to do quite yet. “I had always
wanted to be in medicine”, although he also expressed a real joy for a
fall field trip that he and some classmates made to Algonquin Park.
“St Charles offers a lot
of courses that you might want to take – it kind of prepares you for
what I would be like”, says Filipovic. Well, that and the helpful advice
of an older brother.
