The time will come, within the next
year or two, when Madison Beaudry will need to make a choice. For now,
the Grade 10 St Charles College student continues to combine her love of
both basketball and soccer, much to the delight of the Cardinals
athletics department.
Born in Sudbury, the
only-child is a graduate of Northeastern Elementary School, with her
involvement in sports dating back to her very early years. “I’ve been
playing soccer since I was five – in Grade 6, one of the teachers asked
me to try out to play basketball. I had never played before”, Beaudry
explained recently.
An interior defender on
the soccer pitch, Beaudry trains year round with the Sudbury Canadians,
although she notes a preference for the outdoor game. “I like the
physical part of it – the running, the slide tackling”, she said.
Playing with the
Canadians since the age of eleven, Beaudry fully expected to incorporate
a second sport into her busy schedule.
“I can’t throw a football…and can’t catch either”, she laughs of her
move towards the hardcourt.
She has recently hooked
up with the Jr Vees club basketball program, intensifying her interest
in the sport. “I think it’s starting to get pretty even”, she notes of
the balance she draws between her two athletic endeavours.
As for incorporating the
demands of both sports with the academic requirements at St Charles,
Beaudry admits that it’s hard even for her to fathom trying to juggle
all aspects of her life.
“I have no idea how I do
it – I honestly don’t know. Sometimes it’s pretty hard, but I manage”,
she states. Although other sports may not have worked their way up her
list of priorities quite like soccer and basketball, they have
nonetheless provided some valuable learning tools.
“I remember playing
volleyball in Grade 7…I used to get so mad when I couldn’t serve it over
the net. I would practice twice a week just on my serve. I think it
taught me how to stay calm”, she suggests.
Debating between
attending St Charles and Lasalle as she neared graduation in Grade 8,
Beaudry is not the least bit disappointed with the choice that she made.
“The teachers here are so sports oriented. They help you work on what
you’re doing and have really made it fun for me.”
