Subzero Chill wins bronze - now # 6 in Ontario

It should be a very confident group of Northern Chill 15U girls that re-enter Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA) tournament play sometime, hopefully, in the fall.

The final event of the 2019-2020 season on March 7th would see the Northern Chill 14U Subzero crew pick up a bronze medal competing at the Bugarski Cup - Premier playdown, a feat that had never before been accomplished, at this level, in club history.

And they managed the feat with an interim head coach, no less.

With Carly Mauro otherwise pre-occupied with the birth of the couple's first child near the beginning of March, assistant coach and sister Sara-Jo Santi would step in the fill the void, not missing a single beat.

The Chill dropped their morning opener, 16-25, 11-25, to the Titans Crius from Scarborough, the #1 ranked team in Ontario, which did not drop a single set in maintaining their status at the top of the class by capturing gold.

The locals would register their first big win of the day in game two, sweeping past the Durham Attack Blaze (#6) 25-16, 25-18, before taking down the first place finishers in Pool C with a 25-23, 22-25, 15-9 triumph over the Markham Revolution Rush in quarter final action.

In the semis, the Chill pushed the # 2 team in Ontario to a third set, eventually succumbing 25-22, 22-25, 9-15 to the Halton Hurricanes Category 4.

But it was yet another test of their ability to emerge victorious from a dog-fight that heped the northern squad garner their hardware, recording a 25-19, 25-27, 15-7 win over the SC (South County) Bandits Teal from Windsor.

"The girls played like a team this past weekend," stressed Mauro, who watched much of the action from home, via FaceTime. "They entered the season ranked 13th and have been working extremely hard all year, with the goal of cutting that ranking in half."

"After this weekend's excellent performance, the kids are now ranked 6th in the province."

On an individual level, Mauro highlighted the work of setter Kate Rolston ("contributed to the team's success by running a solid offense with her smart setting choices and hustle on the court") and teammate Marley Tremblay ("unstoppable serving captured many points for the girls, throughout the tournament").

Rounding out the 2019-2020 edition of the Northern Chill 14U HP team are Abbey Walker, Fannie Gauthier, Paige Kultalahti, Manon Charbonneau, Mia Lemay-Evans, Alyssa Nicholls, Hannah Kirwan and Teia Kolari.
