Subzero Chill towers above the pack

For more than half the day, the Northern Chill 14U Subzero girls were making it look surprisingly easy. And even when push came to shove and the competition intensified, the locals were still equal to the challenge, earning goal at a McGregor Cup - Select A tournament in Scarborough last month.

Seeded first entering the event, the Chill Subzero crew swept past both the Scarborough Synergy Nemesis (25-14, 25-16), as well as the Pakmen Gold Diem from Mississauga (25-11, 25-22). A quarter-final victory over the Mavericks Outlaws from Ottawa was equally as comfortable, as the locals cruised to a 25-11, 25-16 triumph.

Now into the final four, the push-back began, as the Sudbury girls went the distance before overcoming the Storm Typhoon from Aurora, 22-25, 25-14, 15-13. Another three set battle would see the northern reps claim bragging rights, at the end of the day, downing the Titans Rogue from Toronto, 25-15, 22-25, 15-9.

"Kate Rolston ran an excellent offence throughout the day, with her smart setting choices contributing to the team's success," noted head coach Carly Mauro. She also took time to praise the work of middles Mia Lemay-Evans and Alyssa Nicholls, given the fact that with a short bench, the pair were pressed into action, right through the day.

"They battled through fatigue and ran unstoppable attacks, which contributed significantly to the team's success," said Mauro. Rounding out the Subzero Chill lineup are Abbey Walker, Marley Tremblay, Fannie Gauthier, Paige Kultalahti, Manon Charbonneau, Hannah Kirwan and Teia Kolari, along with assistant coach Sara-Jo Santi and team manager Jason Evans.
