Northern Chill Blast get their fill of the Barrie Elites
2020-02-06

With the morning preliminary round out of the way, it was time for the Northern Chill 17U Blast girls to get down to business in the afternoon session of the Challenge Cup - Trillium F tournament in Alliston last month.

With one team dropping out, the event was broken into two groups of four, in the morning, as the Chill Blast posted a 2-4 record of sets won/loss, placing third in a tightly contested bracket. The Sudbury crew opened with a split against the Barrie Elites Warriors (25-21, 10-25), doing the same against fellow club-mates, the Barrie Elites Thunder, 25-21, 18-25.

The Georgian Cubs Everest proved to be too tough a mountain to climb, the Chill dropping a 19-25, 18-25 battle, forcing the team to face the second place team in Pool "B" in their key cross-over quarter-final confrontation.

With all hands on deck, the northern reps would still not be vanquished, just yet, by the Barrie troika, stopping the Barrie Elites Empire 27-25, 24-26, 15-13 in a truly titanic tilt. Unfortunately, the carry-over of that match showed in the semi-finals, the Chill swept aside 8-25, 8-25 by the Barrie Elites Thunder in a challenging rematch.

The bronze medal affair would go right down to a third and deciding set, as the Georgian Cubs Shock mounted the podium thanks to a 20-25, 25-21, 15-7 win over the Chill Blast. "Sydney Nicholls provided a strong offensive showing, and was consistent throughout the tournament, while Abby Calvank demonstrated a great defensive effort, coming through with multiple rally-extending digs," noted head coach Jason Nicholls.

"Melodie Laberge stepped in and stepped up her game, when needed, demonstrating that she belongs on the court as a contributing member of the team," he added. Joining Nicholls, Calvank and Laberge on the floor are 2019-2020 teammates Alyssa Cayen, Zoe Renaud, Danika Chenier, Kayla Presley, Emma Harris, Danyka Cholette-Hebert and Ashley Cote.
