Rayside-Balfour Canadians scoring just enough to win
2019-09-19

The Rayside-Balfour Canadians are not scoring a whole lot these days.

Thankfully, the opposition is scoring even less.

The local NOJHL crew recorded their third straight victory Wednesday night in Sault Ste Marie as a third period power-play goal from rookie Oliver Smith (his second of the season) snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the visitors to a 3-1 win over the Soo Thunderbirds.

Goaltender David Bowen turned aside 32 of the 33 shots that he faced as the Canadians matched their high-water offensive output during their current streak by finding the back of the net three times in the Sault.

The Thunderbirds opened the scoring early in period two as Avery Rebek fired the only puck that would fool Bowen in this contest, with Rayside freshman Matty Belanger getting that one back some seven minutes later.

Smith delivered what would be the game-winning goal at the 12:35 mark of the third period, before Nick DeGrazia iced the contest, nailing the empty-net with just 28 seconds remaining.

Rayside outshot the Soo 37-33, climbing over the .500 mark with a record of 3-2-0-0, good for second place in the West Divison, two points back of the Blind River Beavers (4-0-0-0).

The Canadians resume action Friday night in Espanola, facing the Express and heading back on the road next Wednesday to do battle with the Soo Eagles before finally settling back in Chelmsford, hosting the Express come Thursday, September 26th at 7:00 p.m.
