Horizon powerhouse prevails at Franco Hockey
2019-04-23

Take what is already an OFSAA caliber high school boys hockey roster, add in a handful of OHL draft picks from both this year and last, cap it all off with a handful of GNML (Great North Midget League) veterans, including a pair of recent returnees from the all-Ontario championships, and you have built a Franco Hockey Tournament gold medal winning team.

The Horizon Aigles walked away with bragging rights in the "Ecoles Moyennes" (Medium Sized Schools - AA) category recently in Orleans, stopping Ecole secondaire catholique Le Relais from Alexandria 7-2 in the final.

The local squad, which captured the NOSSA "AAA" berth in Sault Ste Marie this winter, posted four straight wins in round-robin play, besting Ecole secondaire Père-René-de-Galinée from Cambridge (5-0), Collège catholique Samuel-Genest from Ottawa (8-0), Collège Notre-Dame Alouettes from Sudbury (1-0) and Ecole Secondaire Jean Vanier from Welland (12-0).

The Aigles (Eagles) continued to cruise in semi-final action, blanking the Dynamos de l'Ecole secondaire catholique de Casselman 4-0, before finally surrendering a pair of goals against in the final.

Led by the offensive tandem of Zacharie Giroux and Hunter Brazier and the rock solid netminding of Blake Bernard and Owen Kilganon, the triumphant Horizon roster also featured Éric Bourassa, Cameron Mundy, Caleb Rainville, Noah Lagrandeur, Justin Dauphinais, Mathieu Poliquin, Bradley Brunet, Ben Lacroix, Samuel Saumure, Alex Doiron, Josh Kavanagh, Bryce Brunet and Jordan Trottier.

The team coaching staff included Paul Renaud, Jayme Richer and Alain Sonier.
