Andrew Varghese will be one to watch
2017-05-22

Andrew Varghese continued to roll at the NOSSA Tennis Championships, while the Horizon Aigles' mixed doubles team of Alex Frappier and Alyssa Fleury viewed the event as a chance at redemption.

A grade nine student at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, Varghese clearly esyablished himself as a talent to watch, following up a convincing triumph at the SDSSAA playdowns one week earlier with a solid performance at NOSSA.

Varghese stopped Joe Snyder of Widdifield 10-5 in the final, after making quick work of Bryce Mastelko from Manitoulin in his opening round match. Meanwhile, Sebastien Bouchard (Collège Notre-Dame) downed Mastelko 8-2 in the consolation final, and has indicated that he will join Varghese in attending the OFSAA Championships May 29th to 31st in Toronto.

The gold medal showdown in mixed doubles play was a rematch of the Sudbury city final, with Frappier and Fleury back on the court against the Lo-Ellen tandem of Bronwyn Mantle and Ben Ashley.

Given their first meeting required three sets, including a tie-breaker in the second, it came as little surprise that the NOSSA final remained close, with Frappier and Fleury recording a 10-7 win in the end.

In girls singles play, Emma Shea of Widdifield proved to be simply too much for Connie Zeng of Lo-Ellen, the North Bay teen besting the local 10-2 in the grand finale.

The boys doubles banner also went to the NDA (Nipissing District Athletics) when Will Snyder and Chris Bowman of Widdifield stopped Jeff Dodds and Will McCormick of Lo-Ellen by a final score of 10-6.

Finally, the closest of all finals actually came in the Women's Doubles grouping as Marina Sinicrope and Sarah Maure of Odyssée (North Bay) get the better of the CND pairing of Kaitlyn Falvo and Mireille Kingsley, 10-7.

In fairness, both Falvo and Kingsley were trying to balance their multi-sport schedules, with both also taking part in the SDSSAA Track & Field Championships at Laurentian University as well on Thursday.
