A busy weekend in local competitive soccer ranks
2016-07-16

The "Sudbury Soccer Snapshot" is a weekly feature that is being presented courtesy of Martin Martic Dentistry. Each and every week, from May 1st through until the end of September, a weekly newsletter will be produced, covering off much of what is on the go in the world of competitive soccer locally.

As well, a recreational soccer "game of the week" will be highlighted, rotating between the various houseleagues that exist in and around Greater Sudbury. In the off-season, the newsletter will scale back to a bi-weekly feature, focusing heavily on the hundreds of young soccer players who shift to the indoor game as the fields become snow-covered for the winter.

The GSSC (Greater Sudbury Soccer Club) Impact U21 women split a pair of close games in Ontario Women’s Soccer League action, on the road, over the weekend. Niagara United avenged a 1-0 loss in Sudbury one week earlier, edging the Impact 2-1, as Alex Smuland found the back of the net for the northern ladies.

But the team rebounded with an excellent effort on Sunday against Bryst Academy, slipping past the home side 2-1 and improving their season mark to 6-2-0. Dana Isaia tallied twice for Sudbury.

Injuries continue to take a toll on the GSSC Impact U21 men, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Whitby Iroquois. Laurentian Voyageurs defender Zach Gallo accounted for the scoring for Sudbury, who have lost only three games to date this summer, all by the identical score of 2-1.

The SDSC (Sudbury District Soccer Club) Rocks U15 Girls displayed some impressive resiliency on the road, coming from behind twice to register ties. The local ladies opened with a 3-3 draw versus Toronto S.C., finishing in a 2-2 deadlock the next day opposite the Bradford Eagles.

Ariane Saumure potted a pair of tallies against Toronto, joined on the scoresheet by Jordin Rancourt, who converted on a penalty kick. Saumure netted her third of the weekend Sunday against Bradford, with Eden Santi adding the remaining marker.

Closer to home, the SDSC Celtics U17 Boys are proving to be more than competitive in making the jump to the Central Soccer League this summer, even if it’s not yet resulting in multiple trips to the win column. The Celtics dropped a pair of one goal decisions in Sudbury over the weekend, as both Kleinburg Nobleton SC (2-1) and Etobicoke (3-2) were able to pick up road victories.

Finally, coach Nick Mancini and the GSSC Impact U18 Boys extended their CSL unbeaten string to seven games, posting a 2-2 draw with Cherry Beach at the James Jerome Sports Complex on Sunday. Danish Butt was in on both Sudbury goals, redirecting the first marker with a perfect header, later playing a perfect cross to the head of Kristian Shuttleworth for the second.

Unfortunately, the Impact dropped a CSL Cup game the previous day, defeated 2-1 by the same opponent, as Harris Butt netted the only Sudbury goal. Prior to that contest, the locals had registered back to back ties in regular season action, directly on the heels of victories over Scarborough, a pair of teams from Richmond Hill, and Aurora.
