Locals move on to the Skate Ontario Championships

A total of eleven local skaters will enjoy the opportunity to showcase their skills in a high end competition in Greater Sudbury next month, following completion of the 2016 Festival of Stars last weekend in Sault Ste Marie.

Representing Northern Ontario, the athletes will take to the ice at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex, from March 18th to the 20th, site of the Skate Ontario Championships.

The local grouping includes:
Kiara Falvo (Sudbury Skating Club) – Star 5 - U13 Women
Jayme Palys (Walden Skating Club) – Star 5 – 13 & Over Women
Marina De Paolis (Walden Skating Club) – Senior Bronze Women
Rowan McCaffrey (Copper Cliff Skating Club) – Junior Silver Men
Taegan Penney (Copper Cliff Skating Club) – Senior Silver Women
Cassandra Bilsborough (Sudbury Skating Club) – Gold Women
Kya Weiman (Sudbury Skating Club) – Pre-Juvenile U14 Women
Breanna Baxter (Sudbury Skating Club) – Juvenile U11 Women
Addison Elliot (Walden Skating Club) – Juvenile U11 Women
Alexis Leblond (Copper Cliff Skating Club) – Bronze Triathlon Women
Eric Gomirato (Sudbury Skating Club) – Gold Triathlon Women

And one final factoid, from the world of local figure skating. In doing some research in anticipation of the celebration of the 80th anniversary, this year, of the Copper Cliff Skating Club, I was reminded of the fact that Patrick Greasley had captured gold in the Junior Men’s event, at the Canadian Championships, back in 1983.

It was interesting, however, to note that the second place finisher to Greasley, that year, was none other than Lloyd Eisler, who enjoyed many years of prominence skating alongside Isabelle Brasseur, capturing the Canadian Pairs title on five occasions.

In addition, the Novice Men’s champion back in 1983 was none other than Kurt Browning.
