Local ringette talent help West Ferris win title

Sometimes a little creativity is needed to keep a sport alive. When the U12 ringette tryouts came up a little short in numbers in the spring, local enthusiasts were hardly deterred.

Youngsters Kayla Lachance, Tyler Caldwell, Lily Hayden, Grace Keenan and Montana Onucky and coach Laura Caldwell joined forces with their friends to the east, hooking up with the West Ferris Ringette U-12 squad.

The combination appears to be paying dividends as the mixed crew of West Ferris and Nickel Basin talent captured their first tournament, as a team, in Kanata last weekend.

Battling a pool of teams that included groups from Ajax, Nepean and West Ottawa, West Ferris stopped Clarence-Rockland 6-4 in the championship final, returning home with gold medals.

"The decision to join forces has proven to be a good one, as these girls now have been given the chance to continue to grow in a sport they truly love" said coach Caldwell.

The timing is virtually ideal for all of the young ladies involved given that North Bay is playing host to the U12 Provincial Ringette Chmapionships next April, allowing the team the opportunity to shine in front of family and friends.

The 2011-2012 edition of the West Ferris U12 ringette team includes Megan Brouse, Emilie Price, Laura Nakanishi, Lily Hayden, Michelle Williamson, Meghan Latimer, Montana Onucky, Tyler Caldwell, Erin Ablett, Kayla Lachance, Grace Keenan and goalie Brenda Hamilton-Periard.

The coaching staff features Terry Ablett, Ryan Brouse and Caldwell as well as team manager Barb Williamson.
