Ringette season is a wrap on local front
2008-04-15

The Sudbury and area ringette season recently concluded as North Bay played host to the Northern Ontario Championships while Walden was the site for the wrapup Nickel Basin Finals. In Walden, the excitement lasted much of the afternoon as three of four finals were decided by just a single goal.

Only the Novice Divison produced a lopsided championship as Walden dumped Valley East Neil's Independent Grocer 8-3. Brooke St. Jacques and Collen Bocy scored two goals apiece for the victors, with Megan Duhamel, Chelsea St. Jacques, Lily Hayden and Morgan Zyma chipping in with singles.

Alexei Moreau answered with a pair of goals in a losing cause for the Valley gilrs with Miranda Boudreau rounding out the scoring. Petite Division Gold medal play would see Valley East Bestech Engineering slip past the Walden Petites 4-3. While the names of Bestech goal scorers were unavailable, Walden received markers from Robyn Lalonde, Katie Lapierre and Erin McLelland.

An all-Valley Tween final as the Camspec Tweens edge Heatwave Tanning Salon 5-4. Fanny Magee registered the hat trick for Camspec while Carly Paquin followed closely with a two-goal effort. Finally, the Junior/Belle championship encounter fittingly capped the day's festivities by requiring overtime as the Valley East Purple Renegades shaded the Walden Juniors 5-4.

Brooke Hope and Amanda Silvestri enjoyed two-goal outings for Valley East while Megan Thompson also hit the scoreboard. Walden goal scorers included Cassidy McAuliffe, Megan Haas, Sarah Ciamachella and Danielle Matte.

Forty ringette teams from across Northeastern Ontario hit the birthplace of ringette, North Bay, for the Northeastern Ontario Regional Ringette Championships held on February 29th - March 2nd (2008). Teams from Sudbury, Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, Valley East, Walden, Iroquois Falls and North Bay competed in every division from bunny (ages 6 and 7) up to the open division with adult players.

Round robin games began on Friday with championship games continuing through to Sunday. The Walden Junior team was in action at the tournament, skating away with the top finish in their division. In round-robin play, Walden dominated their pool to earn a first place finish and move directly to the final against Iroquois Falls.

In the final, Walden fought a very hard battle against the Iroqouis Falls team. Excellent play by all team members, beautifully executed passes and fighting to the finish earned the team a 4-3 win over this very strong adversary. The Gold medal performance was the third medal for Walden crew in as many tournaments this season.

They collected silver medals from Tournaments in Sudbury and Waterloo earlier in the season. Walden Junior Team members include: Casey Digby (Goalie), Sarah Ciammiachella, Megan Haas, Cassidy McAuliffe, Lindsay Brear, Danielle Matte, Rachael Hargan, Sami Walter, Kaitlyn Powers, Tiffany Paradis, Katelyn Marshall, Shalena Lapierre and Carly Mackevicius.

The team was coached by Tom Lapierre with help from assistant coaches Jim Haas and Lise Mackevicius. Theresa Ciammaichella served as team manager.
