The Northern Chill U17 Glaciers Boys are hoping that day two of the OVA 17U Boys Fall Classic in Kitchener last month serves as much more of an indicator of things to come from the 2024-2025 season than their day one performance.
Seeded 10th in a field of 20 teams at the Premier Select competition, the Chill struggled to maintain a middle of the road standard in Saturday Pool B play, opening their year with a split (28-26, 17-25) versus Venom Black Mamba from Richmond Hill (#18).
The Chill went winless against both the Niagara Rapids Fire from St Catharines (#16 – 20-25, 17-25) and Pakmen Gold from Mississauga (#2 – 17-25, 12-25) before earning a second split, this time against the Halton Hurricanes – Category 7 (#7 – 16-25, 25-15).
Facing elimination with a match loss on Sunday, it was a different Chill team that hit the floor early that morning, trimming Pakmen Black (#20) 22-25, 25-19, 15-12 in Championship Bracket first round play.
(the top eight teams in the field of 20 competed in the Premier Bracket on Sunday)
The momentum appeared to carry into quarter-final action as the Sudbury lads stopped the Durham Attack Impact (#9), 25-18, 25-18, continuing their day two run with a 25-15, 26-24 victory over MAC Iron (#15) from Hamilton in the semis.
The team closed off an impressive stretch of volleyball back where they started, downing Venom Black Mamba 25-20, 25-23 to finish 9th overall but tops among the Championship twelve. The locals are back in action on Saturday January 11th (2025), taking part in a Challenge Cup event at a yet to be determined site.
The 2024-2025 Northern Chill U17 Glaciers lineup features Jeremy Rhéaume, Jack Jones, Bryce Broglio, Justin Lafontaine, Hayden Quevillon, Olivier Tremblay, Ethan LeBlanc, Wesley Gibson, Riley Payzant, MacArthur Young and head coach James Schweyer.
