Junior football was re-introduced to Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School this fall and last Thursday, the junior Knights re-introduced themselves to the remainder of the league, registering a 21-6 win over the Lively Hawks.
Running back Levi Blouin chalked up a pair of majors for the winners, with Hudson Leblanc adding the other while Monjed Hussami made good on all three points after attempts.
Bennett Timmers punched in from the one yard line to open the scoring in the contest for Lively, with Lo-Ellen enjoying a 7-6 lead at the half and adding the only scoring in the final 24 minutes of play.
A receiver with the Sudbury U16 Jr Spartans this past summer, Ben Kawa was happy to transition to quarterback in the fall, especially given the disposal of talent on hand for the Purple & Black.
"Obviously Levi is really good so we try and get him running to the open spots," said Kawa, a 14 year old grade ten student who had never played football before signing on with the OSFL team last spring.
"Eventually, if they start to realize that we are running all the time, then we'll try and throw the ball over them. The biggest thing for me is finding the guy that I want and then making sure to lead him, not throw it a little behind him."
As for his positional switch, Kawa suggested that there are far more pros than cons as he tapped into a bit of a different perspective that he garnered during the summer months.
"I found it really helpful," he said. "Receivers are trying to get away from defenders; it's good to know how everybody is thinking."
The Lockerby Vikings also made their return to junior football. The St Benedict Bears, however, were not very welcoming.
The Bears bounced the Vikes 33-0 as Oliver Poupore (2 TDs), Sam Julius (TD), Evan Demarchi (TD) and Domingo Quintana (4 PATs, FG) ran roughshod over the newcomers.
The St Charles College Cardinals looked every bit as impressive as St Ben's, racking up a 42-7 triumph over the Lasalle Lancers as five different players reached the end zone: Fahad Abdulrahman (twice), Nolan Larche, Emmanuel Hagan, Harrison Markiewich and Dexter Mailloux.
Kicker Josh Rioux chipped in with three converts while Taigan Brown added a field goal, with Deran Cooper handling all of the Lancer offense (TD + PAT).
