There was nothing particularly fancy about the lineup that the Sudbury Wolves iced Friday night at home in their final pre-season encounter with the Soo Greyhounds.
Only Chase Coughlan, Nick DeAngelis and starting netminder Nate Krawchuk could be deemed regulars or close to that with the team in 2023-2024. Throw in a couple of experienced trade acquisitions in Gavin Ewles and Daks Klinkhammer and you are left with a whole lot of very energetic new faces, anxious to make an impression.
For as much as this won't be the lineup that the Wolves feature by mid-October (nor were they facing the Soo roster that we will see when the Greyhounds return on October 16th), there was an undeniable sense of positivity of what could be accomplished through hard work and a semblance of defensive diligence that lifted the homeside to a 9-4 win.
At least as encouraging is the fact that the scoring was delivered by eight different sources, with only Lucas Di Giantommaso lighting the lamp twice for head coach Scott Barney and company.
The remaining tallies came courtesy of Rowan Henderon, Tayjon Street, Hudson Chitaroni, Nick DeAngelis, Chase Coughlan, Blake Clayton and Ethan Dean.
The Wolves outshot the Greyhounds 42-15, but we're trailing 1-0 after the first before putting the pedal to the metal over the final two periods of play.
Sudbury will now get ready to open regular season play on Friday at home, welcoming the Barrie Colts to town before facing the Greyhounds in Sault Ste Marie next Saturday.
Another two game set awaits the next weekend as the Peterborough Petes come to town on Friday with the Wolves in Barrie on Saturday night.
