New Sudbury Wolves head coach Scott Barney might be a relatively new name to the Nickel City sports scene - but his newly-named assistant coaches are anything but.
In Lively native and long-time pro Andrew Desjardins (not to mention Stanley Cup champion) and former Sudbury associate coach Drake Berehowsky (2015 - 2017 with Wolves), the local juniors have added a pair of very recognizable faces to the fold.
After spending five years as head coach and general manager of the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL, Berehowsky actually returned to the Wolves right at the tail end of the 2023-2024 OHL season, jumping aboard as a "Defence COaching Consultant" for the playoffs.
"Drake came in at the end of last season and really connected with our players, especially our defensemen," noted Wolves VP and General Manager Rob Papineau in a team-issue media release.
"His experience playing and coaching will greatly benefit our players and team."
A Max Kaminsky Trophy recipient following the 1991-1992 OHL season (Best Defenceman - North Bay Centennials), the 52 year-old blueliner went on to suit up in no less than 549 NHL games, racking up 149 points in 13 seasons split between six teams.
Third last player selected in the 2002 OHL draft (15th round - #296 overall), Andrew Desjardins would battle his way from the Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League, through the AHL and on to the NHL where he would remain for the next seven years.
Taking to the ice for no less than 408 games at that level, the undrafted forward was dressed for 21 of the 23 Chicago Blackhawks playoff games in the spring of 2015 as the team captured Lord Stanley's mug.
From 2017 through until last spring, Desjardins would find himself playing in Germany (Mannheim Eagles - 2017-2022) and Austria (VSV EC - Villach - 2022-2024) prior to returning to his roots.
"Being from Sudbury, I am truly honoured and excited to come home and join the Sudbury Wolves," said Desjardins in the media release. "I can't wait to get started."
In adding Berehowsky and Desjardins to their coaching staff, the Wolves have also parted ways with former assistant coaches Rick Dorval and Gary Ricciardi, both with the team the past two years.
