The Bishop Carter Gators overcame a lopsided round robin loss in pool play to earn some retribution in the SDSSAA Girls Slo-Pitch “A” final, edging the Horizon Aigles 17-15 last Tuesday.
“I knew we had a shot,” admitted head coach Dave Fabiilli, now in his seventh year with the team.
By and large, that is due to a pretty special collection of young women that have called BAC home over the course of the past few years. “Our female athletics right now is incredible,” said Fabiilli. “It was hard to get practice times in (given so many play multiple sports). My starting ten are blessed with great athleticism – but they all know the sport and they are very, very coachable.”
After watching Horizon post the maximum of six runs each and every inning of their first encounter, the Gators held the Aigles scoreless in back to back innings of the final but were still trailing 12-9 heading into their final at-bat. A bases loaded double by Cameron O’Daiskey (who went 17/18 on the day) led the charge with their backs against the wall and then handed things over to pitching ace Caedene Troscinski, the one and only chucker that BAC utilized in the tournament.
Making their first OFSAA appearance as NOSSA champions but their second in as many years, Fabiilli leans towards his team being competitive next week in Hamilton. “Our goal was to win cities and everything else is pretty much gravy,” he said. “We’re going down to win as many games as possible – but I just don’t know what to expect.”
“There are some big schools down there.”
The Gators 2024 roster features Jillian Landry, Caedene Troscinski, Madison Troscinski, Cameron O'Daiskey, Sierra Boyuk, Makenna Penrose, Makenzie Purvis, Sidney Hamilton, Tyla Macleod, Paige Macleod, Ella Caissie, Addison Gibbs, Reese Williamson, Alexis Savard, Trista Baillergeon, Aimie Remillard, Selina Smith and Jaida Chartrand.
The Girls “B” final would see Collège Notre-Dame get the better of the Lasalle Lancers.
