Chill boys were battling hard to stay in the top eight
2024-05-03

A little chaos on day one would give way to an expected flow of results in day two as the Northern Chill 17U Overchill boys recently contested their OVA Provincial Championships in Waterloo.

Seeded 9th in Division 2 play and second in their four team pool to start the tournament, the Overchill lads trimmed the Milton Edge Blades (#8 – 22-25, 25-17, 15-9) and were toppled by the top ranked Thundercats – Ronin from Vaughan (21-25, 23-25).

In game three, the Sudbury crew were surprised 25-20, 24-26, 9-15 by the Ottawa Valley Vikings Invaders, ranked 16th in this grouping, leaving three teams sitting at 1-2 behind the undefeated (3-0) Thundercats entry.

Despite that last setback, the Chill sat at number eight the next day, sweeping three straight matches from the Bounce Boom from Scarborough (#19 – 25-17, 25-21), the Durham Attack Spitfires from Oshawa (#13 – 25-15, 25-17) and the Peterborough Thunder (#10 – 19-25, 25-16, 15-9).

And while that allowed the Overchill squad to retain their spot among the top eight in Division 2 brackets, it would mean a matchup with the Maverick Marshalls from Ottawa, the team that edge out the Thundercats for the #1 spot in this field of eight.

A very solid effort for the Northern Chill boys still saw the team drop a tough 22-25, 22-25 decision to the Maverick side, eliminating the locals from a shot at a medal.

Still, it’s a pretty safe bet that the likes of Greyson Seifert, Mackenzie Alisappi, Nicolas Dalcourt, Davis MacKinnon, Dax Lamoureux, Owen Perron, Brayden Bertrand, Logan Trottier, Mathieu Berthiaume, Matti Jouppi, Ethan Wheatley, Logyn Bernard, head coach Nathan Squires, assistant coach Cassie MacKinnon and team manager Pam Bazinet will hold their collective heads high, having battled tooth and nail to crack the top eight.
