Perhaps the OVA (Ontario Volleyball Association) would like a do-over when it comes to the final rankings for the Northern Chill Subzero U18 Girls, with those standings determining divisional slots at provincials.

True, these figures are based on pre-determined mathematical computations that take into account tournament play for some of the OVA events over the course of the season. At 852.5 points, the Chill fell 7.5 points back of the 16th and final Division I seeding (Storm Typhoon from Aurora).

Of course, that in turn made the local squad the top seeded team in Division II, a ranking that the girls apparently took to heart. The Subzero crew steamrolled their way to gold medals by emerging victorious in twenty straight sets over three days, seldom allowing the opposition to reach even the 20-point plateau until well into playoff action on the third and final day.

The Chill set the tone early, thumping in succession the Niagara Rapids Legends from St Catharines (25-22, 25-17), the Durham Attack Blitz from Oshawa (25-11, 25-16) and the Scorpions Inferno from Cambridge (25-9, 25-17) on day one.

Any thoughts of the Sudbury girls gearing it down to cruise control the next day were laid to rest early, the Chill silencing the Waterloo Tigers Pursuit (25-19, 25-14), the Wildcats Panthers from Markham (25-22, 25-15) and the Durham Attack Blaze (25-14, 25-20), easily earning the top seed in the round of sixteen last Sunday.

For as much as the scores got progressively closer, the dedicated young women would be taken beyond 25 in just one set, recording victories over the Pakmen Black from Mississauga (25-20, 25-17), Lakeside – Isihlangu from Oakville in the quarter-finals (25-19, 26-24), the St Thomas Express in the semis (25-20, 25-20) and the Chatham Ballhawks (25-23, 25-23) in the gold medal encounter.

Closing out their OVA tournament careers in style were Fannie Gauthier, Marley Tremblay, Abby Laporte, Mia Lemay-Evans, Kate Rolston, Aly Nicholls, Olivia Nicholls, Mia Robson, Shae St Onge, Sarah Teddy, head coach Sheldon Root, assistant coach Jason Nicholls and team manager Sarah Kealy.

A member of the AUS champion Acadia Axewomen team, Alexia Lemay-Evans also pitched in to help on the coaching side at provincials
