Laurentian Voyageurs' freshman jumping sensation Shelley Hladin showed the way with a small but spirited L.U. indoor track crew that attended the Sharon Anderson Memorial Track & Field Meet hosted by the University of Toronto last weekend.
The Chartierville (Québec) native started the new year by eclipsing her own school long jump record established just last month, soaring 5.44 metres to lengthen her mark by another eight centimetres, earning a gold medal in the process.
Hladin also placed fifth in the women's triple jump competition (11.12 metres), the fourth-best performance all-time by a Laurentian female athlete.
Third year nursing student and Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School graduate Kristen Mrozewski also landed on the podium with a bronze medal performance in the women's 600 metres. Her time of 1:39.12 was less than a second off her personal best.
Fellow Sudburian and second year nursing student Brandon Radey kicked off his season by placing 21st in the men's 300 metre event in a time of 38.53 seconds. Ironically, Travis Annett (Sudbury) also placed 21st in the men's 600 metre event, his time clocking in at 1:36.31.
The Vees full 25-team member roster will next compete at the Don Wright Challenge at Western University on January 20th.
