Bears maul with SDSSAA banner in sight
2023-10-24

No one has been able to slow down the St Benedict Bears junior boys football team, just yet.

Averaging almost fifty points per game, coach Junior Labrosse and company now have just the Lively Hawks standing between them and their first junior football banner since 2017 - and only second, all time.

The Bears bulldozed their way to the final with a 39-7 win over the St Charles College Cardinals last week as Dylan Nelson enjoyed a three-touchdown performance to show the way.

Quinn Thiessen and Bradley Cothill added the remaining majors while kicker Mateo Bedoya added the final nine points on a field goal, a rouge and five converts.

Kashton Martin countered with the only TD for St Charles, with Alessandro Moretta making good on the point after as the Cardinals trailed only 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and 21-7 at the half.

There was substantially less scoring in the nightcap as inclement weather wreaked havoc in a 7-0 Lively Hawks shutout of the Lasalle Lancers.

Cameron MacIntosh accounted for all of the scoring for the winners, reaching the end zone in the first quarter and then splitting the uprights on the PAT as the Hawks defense held the Lancers at bay in a semi-final battle of teams that both sported 2-2 records in regular season play.

The championship final is set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the James Jerome Sports Complex, with the SDSSAA champion playing host to a representative from Sault Ste Marie one week later with the NOSSA crown on the line.
