Greater Sudbury Cubs right back on the winning track

Between September 15th and the 23rd, the Greater Sudbury Cubs lost three of the four games that they played.

Since then, the local NOJHLers have lost just four of their next 27 outings, putting together winning streaks of both eight and nine games along the way.

One of the trademarks of a very good team is to bounce back quickly following a setback.

Beaten 4-1 by the Espanola Paper Kings last Thursday at home, the Cubs have wasted precious little time getting right back on the horse, adding a 5-2 triumph on Wednesday over the Powassan Voodoos to a 4-1 victory over the French River Rapids last weekend.

Deadlocked in a 2-2 tie at the midway point of the battle with Powassan, the visitors rode goals from Oliver Smith (on the PP), Nicholas Toffoli and Pierson Sobush (into an empty-net) to victory.

Marshall McCharles opened the scoring with the only goal of period one for Sudbury before the Voodoos sandwiched markers from Tucker Shields and Alex Little around a strike from Billy Biedermann, leaving the teams dead even before the troika of unanswered tallies for the West Division leaders.

Sudbury goaltender Noah Metivier would finish the evening with a 35-save performance, 21 of the stops coming in the third period alone while Kannon Flageolle (34/38) took the loss between the pipes for Powassan.

With their rematch at home on Thursday cancelled due to weather concerns, the Greater Sudbury Cubs will close out the 2022 portion of their schedule with a record of 27-5-2-0, good for 56 points and a ten point advantage over the Blind River Beavers.

The Cubs are back in action in the New Year, kicking things off at home on (Thursday) January 5th, welcoming the Elliot Lake Red Wings to the spacious confines of the Gerry McCrory Sports Complex.
