Sudbury representation on very good regional basketball teams has generally been quite strong - but this takes it to a whole other level.
With nothing but Sudbury Jam U11 and U12 talent on hand, the Team North U12 Girls recently secured silver medals, participating in the Ontario Regional Summer Development Program tournament in Toronto.
Carrying a roster of 11 locals, including four underagers, Team North took top spot in their pool with victories over both the Capital Region (50-14) and Tri-County Red (38-21), upending Tri-County Black in semi-final play (29-21) before losing a tough match in the final to Central East Region (49-20).
The 11-player roster was selected from a group of 20 players who attended tryouts and committed to 30 hour of high level training over the summer, prior to the group being pared down to the ultimate tournament version.
The Team North lineup featured Alexie Miller, Avery Smith, Elicia Bihina, Ellie Sauve, Emma DeMarchi, Kallie Smith, Mattia Mullen, Mila Beljo, Sophie Loiselle, Sophie Zubert and Sunny Dunlop-Bassett, as well as coaches Ben Smith, Adam Sauve and Steve Dunlop.
